BESS power plant applications

The BESS power plant can operate in two modalities:


External control: the MC receives the control strategy and the set points from an external controller. The MC implements the set points depending on the battery bank status.

Autonomous control: the MC receives measurements from the system and from the BMS and initiates the control strategy.

In both modalities the BESS power plant can supply grid services (Primary Control Reserve PCR – Secondary Control Power Reserve SCR – Tertiary Control Power Reserve TCR):

  • Limitation of overvoltage caused by RES power injection
  • Energy time shift
  • Peak shaving and load levelling
  • Frequency regulation
  • Voltage regulation
  • Black start

Load shifting

The load shifting is defined as the practice of altering the pattern of energy use so that on – peak energy use is shifted to off – peak periods (low energy cost).

Peak shaving

The peak shaving is the modulation of the BESS power plant’s active power exchange (charge or discharge) to eliminate the peaks in the energy consumption/generation patterns.
The end users tariff is generally made of two components: a component proportional to the absorbed energy and a component proportional to the peak power. The peak shaving allows to reduce the component proportional to the power by reducing the absorbed peak power.

Intermittent RES Support – Generation Time Shift


The BESS power plant is controlled to follow the intermittent RES output power to compensate for its variability versus the hourly energy production forecast profile.
The BESS power plant, coupled to a RES generator, modulates the RES production profile. The BESS absorbs or delivers energy into the grid to compensate the differences between the estimated power production and the actual power available from the RES.

Frequency regulation

The frequency regulation must compensate the power unbalance between the generation and the load in order to arrest the frequency perturbations and maintain the grid stability.

The BESS power plant can contribute to the frequency regulation. The Master Controller (MC) changes instantaneously the active power set point of the inverter depending on the frequency measured in the point of common coupling (PCC).
If coupled to a RES, the BESS power plant makes the RES generator a controlled system able to participate to the frequency regulation.

Black Start

All the BESS plant auxiliaries (control, measurements, …) can be supplied directly from the battery storage.
The BESS plant can be turned on even in case of black out of the main grid. In case of total black out of the main grid, BESS can be used to repower some portions of the grid (black start), in order to allow other power plants to gradually turn on, and to restore the initial grid configuration.
